Project Summary
Janie Crocco spent her Compton Fellowship year studying and addressing issues tied to human trafficking in Italy and Nigeria. During the first part of her fellowship year she focused on the trafficking of Nigerian women to Italy for sexual exploitation. She worked with Associazione Iroko Onlus first, where she participated in the day to day activities of this Turin based non-profit which assists migrant and trafficked women in the process of finding counseling, employment and housing. She also met with representatives of Gruppo Abele, the United Nations Crime and Research Institute and the Torino Anti-Tratta group to gain greater perspective on issues tied to trafficking and assess the local and international approaches that have emerged to address them. During the second part of her fellowship year, Janie travelled to Nigeria where she collaborated with the African Radio Drama Association (ARDA). She worked with ARDA’s staff to include messages related to trafficking and gender issues in some of the organization’s ongoing radio drama programs. She also worked with members of the Women’s Consortium of Nigeria to start an afternoon learning program in a government run shelter which provides assistance to trafficked women and children in Lagos State. Allison Data Phido of the African Radio Drama Association was Janie’s Mentor throughout 2007/2008 fellowship year.
