Project Summary
During her fellowship year, Jessica worked with the Girl Scouts to help address the lack of climate change awareness through youth education and program development. She began her fellowship working with Girl Scouts of the USA in New York City. While there, she worked on a national environmental sustainability study of Girl Scout programming and property operations. She also worked closely with Jodi Schwarzer, a project manager within Girl Scouts of the USA Environmental and Outdoor Program, to coauthor the Girl Scout Climate Change Action Guide – complete with pledges, resources, and activities. Jessica later went to work directly with Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline council to develop and locally pilot Girl Scout specific climate change programming. She worked to create and implement service projects, assembled an educational demonstration library, directed the first Climate Change Challenge camp, and implemented a new patch program within the council to speak to climate change issues. Jessica’s dedicated mentor was Ms. Jean Ann Hughes, Chief Operations Officer of Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council.
