Project Summary
Angel will spend her year in Los Naranjos, El Salvador assisting the rural community to become a sustainable agricultural cooperative. A focal point of her work will be to obtain organic certification for the cooperative. This will allow the community to sell its produce at much higher profit margins in the organic markets, and will thus ensure a more sustainable income for the farmers. Hopefully, this, along with other sustainable agriculture techniques, will reduce deforestation by decreasing the need to clear more farmland through slash and burn practices. Angel's mentor is Armando Marquez Ochoa Executive Director of FUNDAHMER, a non-profit that promotes alternatives to poverty and the depletion of the environment.
