Personal Profile:
Majora Carter founded Sustainable South Bronx in 2001 to simultaneously
alleviate poverty, improve the environment, and reduce public health costs.
She is leading us closer to environmental justice through economically
sustainable projects informed by community needs. The South Bronx
Greenway improves neighborhoods as it connects people to their riverfronts
and each other, SSBx Green Roofs reduce urban heat island effect and
storm-water runoff into our rivers, the B.E.S.T. program prepares citizens for
the growing Green-Collar economy, the Sheridan Expressway
Decommission re-imagines urban land-use and transportation. All of her
initiatives couple the economic value of responsible environmental
management and a happy, healthy, productive urban landscape.

Americans by Essence Magazine for 2007.
